Hosted as a Startup Maine Week event!
The Roux Institute, in partnership with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI), invites you to our upcoming mini Start Summit -- the opportunity to creatively address a local challenge and transform ideas into action.
At this fun and interactive event, you’ll experience what it’s like to build a startup solution in a very short time, and you'll leave with a started business canvas in hand!
You bring the energy to develop big ideas, and we’ll take care of the rest! No prior experience is necessary to participate.
Note:Â To participate in this event, you will also need to register through Startup Maine Week here.
In just three hours, this "mini" Start Summit will demystify entrepreneurship, provide you the tools to "practice" entrepreneurship by solving a local challenge, and will wrap with time for you to put pen to paper on your own startup idea.Â
We'll start with a presentation by Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) about Maine's Ocean Economy, including a discussion of some areas where innovation is needed, and they'll present a more specific challenge statement that we'll use as our thesis for the rest of the workshop.
Â
Next, you'll learn some entrepreneurial tools and frameworks for how to identify a problem to solve, how to test an idea, and how to think through your value proposition to give a compelling pitch. You'll work with others and share ideas - this is all building and stretching your entrepreneurial muscles!
Finally, we'll leave some time for you to start testing your own ideas on paper. Always wanted to start a business? Now's your chance! Work with our team as you put your learnings into practice!
Â
This workshop will be collaborative and fun - a chance to meet and work with others, learn something new, and stretch your innovation skills. Snacks and alcoholic beverages will be provided.Â
In order to focus more deeply on this topic, we've developed this challenge statement to frame our work during this Start Summit.Â
Throughout the Gulf of Maine, climate change is evident: waters are warming and acidifying at rapid rates, sea levels are rising exacerbating coastal flood risk, and species are moving to find more hospitable environments. Without aggressive global emissions mitigation, these profound changes are projected to accelerate for decades to come. With this context, it’s imperative we ask: how might we develop technologies and innovations to build resilience in our coastal communities and marine-dependent industries?
Work in small groups to apply your entrepreneurial learnings and design a business around our specific challenge statement:

Then, we'll share and discuss as a group!
The Blue w(AI)ve Venture Showcase will convene entrepreneurs, investors, students, industry partners, and the public to hear pitches from the seven blue technology companies participating in the inaugural Blue wAIve accelerator program co-sponsored by Northeastern University's Roux Institute and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI).Â
